Hey, CMBC members! It’s a new day and a new year, literally! To kick off 2025, we have an arts-and-crafts activity inspired by Pop Art Day (January 28th).
What You’ll Need:
Paint
Paint brushes
Tape
Glue
Scissors
Box cutter (If you use cardboard, you can use a box cutter, but make sure an adult helps you.)
Cardboard (can be substituted for thick card stock or even a cereal box)
Directions:
1. Print and cut out your activity pieces. Click here to download the template.
2. The Diorama’s Frame: Grab your cardboard (or whatever sturdy material you have chosen) and use the measuring pieces to trace and cut out the frame for the diorama.
Lay the sides, back, and front side-by-side, like in the picture below, and tape them together.
4. Now, fold the piece you just taped together to form the box (like in the image) and tape the open ends together.
5. Tape the top and bottom pieces onto your diorama.
6. Diggy and Pieces: Grab all the pieces you cut out (Diggy and the two starbursts) and grab your paint and paintbrushes. On a covered surface, paint Diggy and the two starbursts however you like!
7. The Diorama: While the Diggy and starburst pieces dry, paint the inside, front, sides, and top of your diorama—you can also paint the bottom if you would like.
8. Diggy and Pieces: While your diorama dries, cut out four small pieces of cardboard (or anything you have that is thick). These will serve as spacers for a 3D effect.
9. Glue two sets of cardboard together, like in the image below. When you are done, you will have two spacers.
10. Take one spacer and glue it on the back of Diggy.
11. Take the other spacer and glue it on the back of the starburst that has “DIGGY!” written on it. Now, glue the front (the part you painted on) of the blank starburst and glue it to the back of the spacer you had glued to the “DIGGY!” starburst.
12. Putting it Together: Once everything is dry, glue Diggy to the inside bottom right corner of the diorama, and then glue your starburst on the top left outside corner of the diorama. Look at the image for reference.
a. NOTE: You can add Ben-Day dots (comic book dots) to give your Diggy Diorama a more "pop art" look.
